What are micronutrients?

Nutrients your body needs in smaller quantities but that are equally vital — vitamins and minerals — quietly holding immunity, bones, energy and mood steady.

Vitamins

Vitamins are organic compounds that play a crucial role in numerous bodily processes. They are classified as water-soluble (vitamin C and the B-complex vitamins) and fat-soluble (A, D, E and K). Found in fruit, vegetables, dairy, meats, fish and fortified foods, they support immune function, energy production, bone health and vision.

Minerals

Minerals are inorganic elements necessary for various physiological functions — calcium, magnesium, iron, zinc, selenium and many others. Found in dairy, meats, fish, nuts, seeds, legumes and whole grains, they support bone health, nerve function, muscle contraction and immunity.

Why they matter

Despite being required in smaller quantities, micronutrients are critical for overall health. They are involved in numerous physiological processes and play a key role in immune function, bone health and energy production.

How to get enough

Aim for an adequate intake of vitamins and minerals through a balanced and varied diet that incorporates a wide range of nutrient-rich foods. A rainbow of plants across the week, alongside quality proteins and healthy fats, supports optimal health and well-being.
